Three college students killed in Cox's Bazar road accident

COX'S BAZAR: Three college students were killed as a bus hit their motorbike in Rashidnagar area under Ramu upazila of the district yesterday morning, reports BSS.

The deceased were identified as Safikul Islam, 22, son of Sabbir Ahamed,

Mohiuddin, 22, son of Siraj Miah and M Foysal Abid, 20, son of Sirajul Islam.

All are residents of Eidgaon-Telipara area in Sadar upazila and students of Cox's Bazar Government College.

Officer-in-Charge of Ramu Police Station M Liakat Ali said the accident took place on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway at about 11 am when a mini bus hit the motorbike from opposite direction, leaving the bike riders Safikul and Mohiuddin dead on the spot and Abid injured.

Abid was admitted to Sadar hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Two held with arms, ammo

Police arrested two alleged arms peddlers with two foreign made pistols, four magazines and 14 rounds of bullets from Shahbajpur Sahebnagar Shantimore area in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district on Saturday.

The arrestees were Alauddin, 45 and Babul Ali, 35, of Satrashia village in Shibganj upazila.

Police sources said on secret information, a team of police from Shibganj police station

raided the aforesaid area at around 5pm and arrested them with the arms and ammunition.

A case was filed with Shibganj police station in this connection.

‘Stop collecting illegal tolls’

Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Debiganj recently asked some members of Truck and Tank-lorry Workers' Union to stop collecting illegal tolls from the vehicles.

UNO office sources said some workers of the union used to obstruct vehicles on the highways and collect illegal toll from the drivers. When the UNO came to know about this, he called the leaders of the union and asked them not to be involved with this kind of misdoings.  

“I will take stern action if anyone collects illegal tolls from the drivers,” said the UNO.

Arrest of criminals demanded

Demanding immediate arrest of the attackers on a journalist in Dhobaura upazila of Mymensingh, fellow journalists formed a human chain in front of upazila parishad yesterday.

Journalists working for different media, members of Jugantor Swajon Samabesh and local people joined the programme.

Sources said Abul Hashem, upazila correspondent of Daily Jugantor came under attack on Friday by Jahangir Hosain, a businessman of Dhobaura Bazar and his men as Hashem covered a recent news of a mobile court that fined Jahangir.  

They beat up the journalist with iron rods and he sustained injuries in his head, back and hands.

The attackers also snatched away Tk 50,400 in cash when he was on the way to Mymensingh for business purposes.

Injured journalist Hashem admitted to Dhobaura Upazila Health Complex was released from the hospital on Saturday.

Hashem lodged a case with Dhobaura Police Station accusing five people including Jahangir on Saturday, said Md Shawkat Alam, officer-in-charge of Dhobaura Police Station.

Police drives are on to arrest the attackers soon, said the OC.

Senior vice president of Dhobaura Press Club Motilal Sarker, its general secretary Sirajul Islam, joint secretary Monjurul Haque and local Sangbadik Samity’s vice president Kamrul Islam Amir addressed the rally, among others.

Cattle trader hacked to death

Dinajpur: A cattle trader was hacked to death by unknown assailants at Milonpur in Birganj upazila on Saturday night, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Md Sharif, 38, son of Chan Miah of Araji Milanpur village in the upazila.

Police said unknown miscreants stabbed the cattle trader with sharp weapons while he was returning home from bazaar around 10:00 pm, leaving him critically injured.

Later, locals rushed Sharif to Thakhurgaon Adhunik Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Early winter vegetables bring smiles on Netrakona farmer’s faces

Netrakona: Early winter vegetables have started arriving in different kitchen markets, Hats and Bazers of all the ten upazilas of Netrakona. , reports BSS.

Local farmers said different varieties of winter vegetables including cauliflower, cabbage, basil, tomato, gourd, bean, brinjal, radish and carrot are being sold in different kitchen markets.

District Agriculture Extension Department (DAED) officials said today cultivation of early wintervegetables is gaining popularity in the district as the vegetable growers has been getting more profits by cultivating vegetables for last few years.

When contacted, the Deputy Director of the DAED Netrakona, Bilash Chandra Paul said the betteroutput and high demand of the early winter vegetables have brought smiles on the faces of the vegetable growers this year.

He said high demand and good market prices of the early winter vegetables have inspired many farmers of the district to cultivate those vegetables.

Talking to the BSS, over a dozen of farmers of the South Bishiura and Challisha villages in NetrakonaSader upazila said they have cultivated early varieties of cauliflower, cabbage and tomato in their farm and fellow lands in this winter season and got more profits after meeting the production costs.
