Among the prominent mosques that take Barisal to a different level in terms of our architectural heritage, Qasba (Kasba) Mosque is one of them. The medieval mosque, also known as Allahr Mosque, is located at Qasba village in Gaurnadi upazila of Barisal district. It is just a few metres away from the Barisal-Faridpur highway.
As there is no inscription on the mosque, it is difficult to determine the exact date of construction. It is a nine-domed square mosque, built of red bricks. The interior is divided into nine equal square bays (areas) by four stone pillars, which support the domes on the roof. The mosque has three archways, on the north, south and east sides.
The mosque is famous for its stunning terracotta ornamentation, both in and outside. Varieties of decorative designs, such as floral scrolls, rosettes and cusped arch motifs are visible in the doorway arches and mihrabs (niches) inside. All these wonderful decorations give the mosque an eye-catching look and notable heritage value.
There is a water reservoir in front of the mosque compound that catered to the ablution needs of devotees. It appears to have been excavated at the same time as the mosque, but it is almost dried up now.
Qasba Mosque appears to be a replica of the nine-domed mosque of Khan Jahan at Bagerhat and Masjidkur Mosque in Khulna. However, from the construction materials, physical appearance and ornamentation of the building, it is assumed to be a Sultani mosque, built in the 15th century. According to local legend, it was built by one Sabhi Khan.
The Department of Archaeology (DOA) took the initiative to restore the mosque. It is a protected monument and one of the best-preserved ancient mosques in the country. Even now, it is used for prayers five times a day.
Qasba Mosque or Allahr Mosque, no matter what we call it, is a gorgeous religious heritage structure of Bangladesh. n
