Truck rams teenager to avoid ‘police extortion’

A teenage boy was killed after a speeding truck knocked down him while fleeing from a police check post at Fouzdarhat in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong on yesterday morning, reports UNB. The deceased was identified as Tarek Rahman, 13, son of Ali Akbar, a resident of Fouzdarhat area in Sitakunda upazila.

Locals alleged a team of highway police has been carrying out extortion in the name of searching the vehicles at Bandar Toll Road at Fouzdarhat.

On Tuesday morning, the police team gave signal to a truck to stop at the search point.

However understanding the matter, the driver increased the speed of the vehicle defying the police signal to avoid giving toll.

At one stage, the speeding truck knocked down Tarek and plunged into a roadside ditch as the driver lost his control over the steering around 9:30 am, leaving the teenage boy injured severely.

Later, Tarek was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries around 12:30 pm, said CMCH Police Camp in-charge sub-inspector Jahirul Islam.

Following the incident, angry locals chased down the policemen and beat up them when at least four law enforcers received injuries.

On information, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Police Station Iftekhan Hasan along with a police team visited the spot and brought the situation under control.
