Children and teachers at Goloknagar Government Primary School in Shailkupa upazila have been attending classes in one room over the past one year as the school building is risky for use.
Sources said the school was founded in 1990. In absence of any repair work for long the four-room school building has become vulnerable. Cracks have developed on its wall, floor, roof and beam. The only one tin-shed room was also declared abandoned one year ago.
Abdur Rahman, a student of class-IV, said the situation is appalling. “Two classes are held in one room and we cannot listen to our teachers properly,” he said.
Assistant teachers Amir Uddin Ansary and Rowshan Ara said two classes are taken in a small room day after day. The classes will be taken in open spaces after the rainy season is over, they said, adding the qattendence of students is poor due to the dilapidated condition of the school building.
Headmaster of the school Md. Hasanuzzaman said the school building is bad shape. Academic activities of the school have been greatly hampered due to the situation where teachers are finding it difficult to continue taking classes.
“We are yet to receive any government assistance till now. I urge the authorities to take measures in order to rehabilitate the school soon,” he said. He also said guardians are reluctant to send their children to the school for fear of accident.
Shailkupa Upazila primary education officer Din Mohammad said funds for repairing 13 school buildings will come this financial year. But the concerned Goloknagar Government Primary School is not among those in the list. The school authorities have to seek for immediate construction of a new school building.
