Robber killed in Gazipur gunfight

A robber was killed allegedly in a gunfight with police in Noljani area of Gazipur city early yesterday while a group of robbers were making preparation for robbery in the area. Two policemen were also injured in this incident, said police. The deceased was identified as Mohammed Afaz Uddin, 32, son of Mohammed Gias Uddin of Patahar village under Pagla police station in Mymensingh.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Gazipur Mohammed Shakhawat Hossain said, a group of armed robbers were making preparations for robbery at Noljani area of Gazipur city early yesterday. Tipped-off, the police conducted a raid in the area. Sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire on the cops and tried to flee from the spot. At one point, the police fired back and the robber Afaz Uddin was seriously injured by a bullet.

He was then sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College and Hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead. However, the police held two others — Rubel (30) and Alam (28) — in connection with the robbery. A sub-inspector of Joydebpur police station Mohammed Sadekur Rahman and constable Mohammed Hazrat Ali were injured during the incident, he said.
