A 12-year-old girl who was allegedly set on fire by her aunt for 'stealing a mobile phone set' at Khainput village in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi on Friday night died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital yesterday, reports UNB. Aziza Begum, a class-V student and daughter of Abdus Sattar, was first taken to Narsingdi District Hospital with severe burn injuries and then shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where she died around 1:30am.

Rehena Begum, mother of the victim, alleged that her sister-in-law, wife of Salam, the younger bother of Abdus Sattar, beat up Aziza accusing her of stealing a mobile phone set and threatened her to burn alive around 4pm on Friday. Later, Aziza went missing. Hearing her groaning, neighbors and family members rushed to the spot and rescued her with sever burn injuries from beside her uncle’s house around 9pm. Officer-in-charge of Shibpur police station Syeduzzaman said no written complaint is yet to be filed in this connection.
