RAJSHAHI: Speakers at a training session said substantial and sustainable promotion of modern technologies in fish farming has become an urgent need for boosting its outputs to address the gradually increasing nutritional demands, reports BSS. To this end, time has come to bring people of various professions including the unemployed youths and police personnel under need-based training. All of the authorities concerned should work together in this regard, they viewed.
They were inaugurating the two-day training course titled "Modern Technologies for Fish Farming" for some policemen held at Police Lines School in the city yesterday. Department of Fisheries (DoF) and Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) jointly organised the training in order to sensitise the police personnel towards fish farming through the best uses of modern techniques.
RMP Commissioner Md Shamsuddin addressed the session as chief guest while Divisional Deputy Director of DoF Mahbub Ul Alam and District Fisheries Officer Golam Rabbani spoke as special guests with Tanveer Haider Chowdhury, Deputy Commissioner (Headquarters) of RMP, in the chair.
RMP Commissioner Shamsuddin urged the participating policemen to utilise the knowledge to be acquired from the course for the best uses of the existing water bodies through proper application of the modern technologies. He also asked to bring their respective areas unused ponds and canals under fish farming for boosting fish production, creating employment opportunities and eradicating the protein deficiency.
The RMP commissioner said enhanced fish production can be the effective means to meet protein deficiency and poverty alleviation along employment generation.
Referring to the immense prospect of the fisheries sector they said fish production could easily be increased to a great extent through the best use of existing natural resources. Conservation of the water resources and other wetlands has become indispensable for the sake of boosting fish production to meet up the national protein demands.
The speakers put emphasis on formulation of tough law against dumping of ponds and other natural water bodies as the aquatic biodiversity and fish production of the area have been decreasing gradually due to various manmade and natural causes.
Besides, they recommended for time-fitting policy for freeing the water resources from all sorts of pollution and contamination so that the indigenous fish species could be saved from extinction.
