83 arrested in Ctg
CHITTAGONG: Police in separate drives arrested 83 people, including a Jamaat activist, from different upazilas of the district on Sunday night.
During the drive police also seized 53 liters of liquor.
Naimul Hasan, additional superintend of police (Special Branch) of Chittagong district, said they detained 83 people in overnight drives in various places under different upazilas on Sunday night.
He said among the arrestees, one was Jamaat activist while eight were accused in regular cases which were lodged with police stations and 74 were convicted.
3 held with 1.17 lakh yaba pills
Detectives in a drive arrested three alleged drug peddlers along with 1.17 lakh yaba tablets from Jatrabari area of the capital early yesterday.
Sources said a team of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) conducted a drive in the area early yesterday and seized yaba tablets searching the car and arrested the trio in this connection.
Man ‘commits suicide’
SYLHET: A man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his room in Akaliya area of the city on Sunday night. The deceased was Abus Sukkur, 25, a resident in Akaliya area.
Family sources said Sukkur hanged himself in his room on Sunday night following a family feud. They rescued him after breaking the door of the room. On information police recovered the body and sent it to the Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Kamal Ahmed, sub-inspector of Kutwali police station.
Businessman mugged
CHITTAGONG: A group of muggers took away Tk 10 lakh from a businessman in Shah Amanat Market area under Kotwali police station in the city yesterday.
Kotwali police said a businessman Mohiuddin Kamal withdraw Tk 10 lakh from Rifle Club branch of United Commercial Bank Limited and was going to deposit that money in IFIC bank. When he reached in the area around 2pm, a group of muggers attacked Kamal and took away a bag containing the money.
Sub Inspector Jahidul Kabir of Kotwali Police Station said they are looking into the matter.
