Media focus on Yunnan delegation open day

On the morning of October 19, the delegation from Yunnan Province held a plenary meeting in the Yunnan Room of the Great Hall of the People to discuss the 19th CPC National Congress report. The plenary meeting was open to the media and attracted more than 60 journalists from 45 domestic and foreign outlets.

Mr. Chen Hao, head of the delegation and CPC secretary of Yunnan’s Provincial Committee, and Ruan Chengfa, deputy head of the delegation, deputy secretary of Yunnan’s Provincial Committee and governor of the province together with the other delegates answered questions. The reporters raised questions concerning the path of Yunnan’s leap-frog development, its moves to rectify the tourism market and on the tough battle against poverty going on in the province.

How will Yunnan achieve leap-frog development?

Journalists from Hong Kong asked how the province will promote further develop and build a well-off society by playing to its competitive advantages. Answering the question, Chen Hao said that Yunnan expects to move forward in four main ways. Firstly,Yunnan will promote leap-frog development by changing thoughts and concepts. It will attempt to eliminate close-mindedness, conservatism, complacency and the other backward mindsetsthat exist in some sectors of the government and civil society.This sort of transformation will be based on the concepts of innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development. Secondly, the province will promote further development by deepening the reform and opening up process. Thirdly, Yunnan looks to strengthen the driver of innovation. In recent years, the province has been actively promoting cooperation among industries, universities and research facilities. The province is vigorously recruiting scientific and technically innovation individuals for high-tech projects who work to refine and expand the industires of information technology, pharmaceuticals, advanced equipment manufacturing and other strategic and emerging sectors. Such efforts, Chen Hao explained, are providing strong support for leap-frog development. The fourth way the province looks tofurther develop is by protecting and safeguarding a healthy environment.

How will Yunnan upgrade its tourism industry?

By answering “What new measures will Yunnan take to transform and upgradeits tourism industry infundamental and orderly ways? Ruan Chengfa explained that Yunnan will pursue the healthy development of its tourism industry in three ways. Firstly, it will go all out to build a holistic tourism sector while promoting the transformation and upgrading of the industry’s infrastructure, products and destinations. Secondly, the province will build with “intelligent tourism” concepts and accelerate the creation of “travelling in Yunnan with one mobile phone.” Thirdly, it will comprehensively focus on improve its management services, while speeding up the creation of a digital platform and handling tourism complaints in a timely and effective manner.

How will Yunnan win the tough battle of poverty alleviation?

By answering “What steps will Yunnan take to tackle the task of eliminating poverty in deeplyindigent areas?” Chen Hao answered that combatting poverty is indeed hard work, seeing that the province has more than 4.47 million poverty-stricken people and 88 counties classified as “impoverished”. However, Yunnan has confidence and is determinated to ensure comprehensive poverty eradication by 2020.This is Yunnan’s promise to the Party’s Central Committee. To this end, Chen Hao explained, Yunnan will solidly promote accurate poverty alleviation efforts.In close combination with regional development, the province will implement poverty alleviation measures affecting villages, households and individuals. He used the terms “blood transfusion” and “blood making” to explain the goal of pursuing both the material and spiritual eradication of poverty, thus ensuring that no one will not be left behind in the building of a well-off society.
