Life comes to a halt due to torrential rain

NARAIL: Torrential rain has paralysed the normal life as well as hampering business activities of the residents of the district, reports BSS.

Most of the low-lying areas of the district have been submerged, much to cause sufferings for residents of the district.

The town roads at Government victoria college area, City College para, Barashula, Vatia, Mohiskhula, Aladatpur, Durgapur, Bahirdanga, Bhowakhali, Bhadulidanga, Kurigram, Masumdia, Uzirpur and Bijoypur areas have remained under water for the last 24 hours, locals said.

They said traders at different markets keep their shops shut as rainwater entered into their business establishments.

They said many roads including upazila headquarters roads go under water even after light to moderate rainfall due to lack of proper drainge system as almost all the natural water bodies in the town have been narrowed by the grabbers.

Many of them have already built buildings and commercial establishments encroaching water bodies.

Non-availability of transport also caused untold sufferings to the commuters.

Van-rickshaw pullers and drivers of three wheelers were seen demanding excessive fare from the commuters taking advantage of the bad weather and thin traffic.

Deputy Director of Narail Agricultural Extention Department Sheikh Aminul Haque said almost all the low-lying areas’ vegetables and other crops field had gone under water and recent days’ incessant rain damaged the vegetables fields.
