Mother ‘kills self’ after
‘killing child’ in Kushtia
Kushtia: A woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of her house after strangulating her two-year-old boy following a family feud at Naoda Bahalbaria village in Mirpur upazila yesterday, reports UNB.
Quoting local people, police said Abdul Karim used to lock into altercation with and his wife Hena Begum over her extramarital relationship with one Manik of Talbaria village.
On Monday noon, Hena strangled her son Hasibul and took her own life by hanging herself from the ceiling of her house. On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to Kushtia General Hospital.
Arms traders held in Pabna
Pabna: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in separate drives arrested two arms traders from Ishwardi upazila on Sunday night, reports UNB.
Ruhul Amin, company commander of Rab-12, said this at a press briefing yesterday afternoon.
Based on secret information, the law enforcers arrested Abdullah al Mamun from Moddho Aronkola area and Mafizul Islam Mukul from Arzu market at night.
The Rab men also recovered four foreign pistols, one foreign gun, nine rounds of bullets, five magazines and some drugs from their possession, said the official.
10 arrested at Benapole
Benapole: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained 10 Bangladeshi nationals from Gatipara border under Benapole Port Police Station as they were illegally entering into Bangladesh from India yesterday morning, reports UNB.
The detainees, who went to India looking for good job, were hailing from different areas of Pirojpur and Bagerhat districts.
Lt Col Tariqul Hakim, commanding officer of BGB-21 battalion, said on secret information a team of BGB conducted the drive in the area yesterday morning and detained ten people, including two women.
Sensing the presence of BGB men, the human traffickers managed to flee the scene.
Later, BGB handed over the detainees to Benapole Port Police Station.
A case was filed.
Two die from electrocution
Moulvibazar: Two construction workers died from electrocution at a house in Shamsernagar area in Kamalganj upazila yesterday morning, reports UNB.
The victims were Syed Ali, 22, son of late Makbul Mia and Misir Ali, 15, son of Abdul Mannan, both hailed from Kulaura upazila.
Local people and police said the two got electric shock around 8:30 am when they came in contact with a live electric wire while working in an under-construction building in the area.
Locals rushed them to Kulaura Health Complex where duty doctors declared them dead, said Shamim Musa, officer-in-charge of Kulaura Police Station.
Indian goods seized

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized huge Indian saree, three-pieces and import-banned medicines worth Tk 20 lakh from Sadipur border under Benapole Port Police Station on Sunday night.
Tipped-off, a team of BGB conducted a drive in the frontier area and found the Indian contraband worth Tk 20 lakh in abandoned condition, said Lt Col Ariful Haque, commanding officer of BGB-49 battalion.
The seized goods were later deposited to Benapole Custom warehouse.
A case was filed.
Handwashing Day observed
NARSINGDI: The district administration in a befitting manner observed Global Handwashing Day yesterday with a view to checking different water-borne diseases like diarrhoea and pneumonia which can play a vital role in reducing mortality rate, reports BSS.
On the occasion, a post-rally discussion was held at Deputy Commissioner's office conference room.
District administration and department of Public Health Engineering organised a rally that paraded from local circuit house to collectorate office.
Chairman of Narsingdi Sadar upazila Parishad Monzur Elahi and a number of government and non-government officials, including six upazila nirbahi officers (UNO), journalists, students and teachers from different schools participated in the rally.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shubash Chandra Biswas said it is essential to wash hands regularly for leading a healthier life. He urged all specially the students for washing hands regularly using the soap before and after the meal and after using toilets.
Khulna-Jessore- Benapole route restored

Train communications on Benapole-Jessore-Khulna route was resumed yesterday morning after 24 hours of disruption following derailment of two bogies of a commuter train in Navaran area.
The train communications were restored around 9:30 am, said engineer Golazar Hossain, of mechanical branch of Benapole Railway Station.

Saiduzzaman, station master of Benapole Railway Station, said that two bogies of the Benapole-bound commuter train veered off the track in the area adjacent to Navaran Railway Station around 9:00 am, disrupting train movement on the route.
