Over 9,000 solar panels set

up in Mymensingh

MYMENSINGH: The District Administration set up over nine thousand solar energy system at a cost of Taka over 20 crore in 13 upazilas of the district under Test Relief (TR) programme, reports BSS.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Office (DRRO) sources said solar panels were distributed among the poor families with a view to consume energy.

The beneficiaries are very happy and expressed satisfaction over the initiatives taken by the government.

Of the total, 405 solar panels were set up spending Taka over 1.39 crore in Haluaghat upazila, 432 panels spending Taka over one crore in Dobaura upazila, 731 panels spending Taka 1.19 crore in Phulpur upazila, 706 panels spending Taka over 81 lakh in Tarakandha, 634 panels spending Taka over 1.74 crore in Gouripur upazilas and 546 panels spending Taka over two crore in Sadar upazila.

Besides, 1,039 solar panels spending Taka over 1.24 crore in Muktagachha, 409 panels spending Taka 1.91 crore in Phulbaria, 539 panels spending Taka 1.87    crore in Trishal, 1,250 panels spending Taka 1.84 crore in Ishwarganj,

1323 panels spending Taka 1.93 crore in Nandail, 662 panels spending Taka 1.88    crore in Gafargaon and 588 solar panels spending Taka over 1.72 crore were set up in Bhaluka upazila.

DRRO Mohammad Hossen told BSS that over eight thousand more solar panels have sanctioned in the district for distribution.

Man arrested with 10 gold bars

Customs intelligence held a suspected gold smuggler along with 10 pieces of gold bars worth TK 50 lakh from Benapole international check post yesterday.

The arrestee was identified as Md Main Uddin, 26, of Muradnagor upazila in Comilla district.

Abdus Sadek, deputy commissioner of Benapole Customs Intelligence, said on secret information, a team of customs intelligence conducted a drive here and arrested the man.

After searching his body, they recovered 10 pieces of gold bars. The seized gold bars were deposited to Benapole customs godown. A case was filed in this connection.

Criminal arrested with 5 kg heroin in Chapainawabganj

An alleged drug peddler was held with a big haul of heroin from the bank of the River Padma at Sarengpur (Natunpara) village in

Godagari upazila of Rajshahi district on Sunday evening.

The arrestee was identified as Md Sajeman, 37 of Hakimpur in Chapainawabganj sadar upazila.

On information, an operation team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-5 from Chapainawabganj camp raided the aforesaid area around 5:30 pm and arrested Sajeman with 5 kg of heroin worth Tk 5 crore, RAB sources said.

Sources added that Sajeman was known as a top drug peddler and was a warranted accused in a number of drug cases.

RAB members had been trying to arrest the criminals for a long time, sources added further.

The arrestee was handed over to Godagari police station. A case was filed.

Woman killed ‘by husband’

A woman was killed allegedly by her husband and in-laws at Chandkathi village in Patuakhali district on Sunday.

According to local sources, Nazmul, 30, son of Shahid Howlader married Suma Akhter, 22 four years ago without his family’s consent. But there was conflict between the couple over different issues. Nazmul often tortured his wife.

Azam Khan Farooqi, Officer-in-Charge of Bauphal Police Station, said police recovered the body and sent it to Patuakhali General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

Victim’s father Shafiqul Islam filed a murder case with Bauphal Police Station.

Firearms, bullets seized in Magura

MAGURA: Police in a drive seized two pistols and five bullets in Dumursia Bazaar area under Mohammadpur upazila of the district on Sunday night, reports BSS.

Being informed, police rushed to the spot and recovered the firearms and bullets in an abandoned condition, ASI of Babukhali police camp Raj Kumar said.

Police are looking into the matter, he said.

Student killed in road accident

NATORE: A school student was killed as a bus ran over him in Duttapara Bazaar area on the Natore-Dhaka highway in Sadar upazila of the district yesterday morning, reports BSS.

The deceased was identified as Ismail Hossain, 15, a student of class nine of Duttapara High School and son of Abdus Sattar of Goaldanga village of the upazila.

Sub inspector of Zhalmalia Highway Police Camp Shariful Islam said the accident took place at about 8am when a speedy bus ran over Ismail in the area while he was crossing the road.

He died on the spot.

Two arrested with yaba tablets

Cox’s Bazar: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested two people, including a woman, along with 970 pieces of yaba tablets from Nayapara refugee camp area of Teknaf upazila on Sunday night, reports UNB.

The arrestees were identified as Anwar Hossain, 22, son of Mohammad Hossain and Nurunnahar Begum, 25.

On secret information, a team of Rab-7 conducted a drive in the area around 8:00 pm and arrested two people along with the yaba tablets worth Tk 4.85 lakh, said an elite force press release.

The team also recovered Tk 60,000 in cash.
