Madrasah employee held over FB comments on PM

Laxmipur: Police on Wednesday arrested a young man from a madrasah in Ramganj upazila for posting derogatory comments about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his Facebook wall, reports UNB.

The arrestee Mamun Pandit, 27, was a computer operator of Fatehpur Madrasah.

Police said Mamun recently was making derogatory comments about the PM and the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and posted it on his Facebook page.

Angered by the incident, local activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League besieged the madrasah in the afternoon.

On information, police went to the spot, arrested Mamun and brought the situation under control, said Tota Mia, officer-in-charge of Ramganj Police Station.

Two held with gold bars

Customs officers arrested two people with eight gold bars worth Tk 41 lakh from Benapole Check Post in the district yesterday.

The detainees are Sujon Mia, 24 and Joni Mollah, 22.

Deputy Commissioner of Benapole Customs, Excise and Vat office Mohammad Sadik Hossain said on information customs officers held Sujon Mia and Joni Mollah at the check post and seized the gold bars.

A case was filed with Benapole Port police station in this regard.

BGB-BSF flag meeting held

A commander level flag meeting between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Indian Border Security Force (BSF) was held at Sonamasjid frontier under Shibganj upazila in the district on Wednesday.

The seven-member BGB team, led by the commanding officer of BGB-59 Battalion Lt Col. Md. Rashed Ali, and the nine-member team of BSF, led by the commandant of BSF-24 Battalion Shree Anil Kumar Hatkar, joined the meeting.

BGB sources said different issues like firing on innocent people at frontier areas, smuggling of drugs, arms, explosives and ammunition, border security and coordinated patrol on frontier were discussed in the meeting.

Both the parties agreed to work together to ensure peace on the frontiers, meeting sources said.

Ex-army man stabbed dead

Habiganj: A former army member was stabbed to death allegedly by some miscreants over land dispute on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Adityapur in Bahubal upazila yesterday, reports UNB.

Quoting local people, police said a group of miscreants riding by a microbus intercepted a CNG-run auto-rickshaw carrying Sajidur Rahman Tenu Mia, 50, a former member of Bangladesh Army and son of Aftab Mia while going to Habiganj court around 8:00 am to appear before it in a case filed over land dispute.

At one stage, the miscreants stabbed Tenu indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.

Later, he was taken to Bahubal Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead.

Biswajit Dev, officer-in-charge of Bahubal Police Station, said Tenu had an enmity with his relatives over land dispute and the miscreants might have killed him over the issue.

Two fishermen fined for  defying hilsa ban

CHANDPUR: Members of River police arrested two fishermen on charge of catching hilsa in the Meghna River defying the government’s 22-day ban, reports BSS.

Acting on a tip-off, operational teams of River police of Chandpur conducted a raid in the Meghna River around 10:30pm of yesterday and arrested the duo for catching hilsa, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of River police M Abul Hasim.

Later, a mobile court led by Executive Magistrate NDC Narayan Chandra Pal fined them Tk 5,000 each, said M Abul Hasim.

The law enforcers also seized two boats, 1,000 meters of illegal current nets and eight kilograms of mother hilsa from their possessions.

Later, the seized hilsa were distributed among the local orphanages and the net was burnt.

The government has imposed a ban on the catching, selling and transportation of mother hilsa from October 1-22.

PDB worker electrocuted

SHERPUR: A worker of Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) was electrocuted and two others were injured in Lava area under Nakla upazila of the district yesterday noon, reports BSS.

The victim was Zahid Hossain, 26, a worker of BPDB and son of Motiur Miah, a resident of Kursabadgour area of the upazila town.

Officer-in-charge of Nakla police station Khan Abdul Halim said they got electric shock while repairing an electric line of PDB in the area.

Zahid died on the spot and two others injured were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
