Academic activities of more than 42,000 students of Government Azizul Haque (AH) College in Bogra have been hampered as the institution is beset with various problems like shortage of classroom, teacher and hostel accommodation for a long time. The college administration has admitted the difficulties and said the government has taken initiative to solve the problems.
Meanwhile, the authorities have constructed a multi-storey building, which will party solve the requirement of classroom, and finalised a plan for building a women hostel.
"We have only 46 classrooms against the need of 70 for holding classes of 23 subjects, including at honours level, while only 163 teachers are there against 184 posts; whereas the requirement is around 400 teachers," said Prof Md Shamsul Alam, Principal of the college.
The college is one of the largest educational institutions in the northern region. It was established in 1939 and declared it a government college in 1968.
Shahanaj Pervin a final year student of Philosophy department, told this
correspondent that only one classroom was allotted for 350 students of Philosophy department in the collage for finial year students. “Most of the times we have to leave the classrooms before the scheduled time as the teachers have to shorten their lectures to make room for other classes,” said Shahnaj. For the shortage of classroom students of the department have to leave their class, she added.
Around 18,000 students of the college have to accommodate themselves in more than 1,000 privately-run boarding
houses in areas near the college and the town for lack of college hostel facilities for long time.  Around 518 students of the college stay in “Begum Rokeya Hall” that has an accommodation capacity of only 350 students. Few years ago, the college authorities had to close residential  halls to avoid student clashes.
Laizu Akhtar, hall superintendent of the college, said for the lack of accommodation students have been sharing beds. Only one toilet is allotted for 40 students in the Begum Rokeya Hall, said Shahanaj Parvin.
Transport is yet another problem; only four 52-seat buses are too inadequate to carry over 18,000 students from different areas of the district. College authorities said at least four more buses are needed for the purpose.
