AL leader hacked to death

A former UP member and local Awami League (AL) leader was hacked to death at Bakra Dikdana in Jikargachha upazila on Sunday night.

The deceased was Siddiqur Rahman, 45, a former member of Bakra union parishad, vice-president of the union unit AL and son of Tufan Goldar of Baliadanga Khosalnagar village.

Sikdar Matiar Rahman, in-charge of Bakra Police Investigation Centre, said some unidentified miscreants stabbed Siddiqur around 7:30pm while he was going to Bakra Bazar, leaving him critically injured.

Locals rescued him and took him to Jessore General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Dr Bazlur Rashid Tulu, a resident physician at the hospital, said several injury marks were found on the body.

Sheikh Abu Saleh Masud Karim, officer-in-charge of Jikargachha Police Station, said the motive behind the killing could not be known yet.

Two women killed in 2 dists

Laxmipur, Kishoreganj: Two women were killed in Laxmipur and Kishoreganj districts yesterday.

In Laxmipur, a woman was strangulated to death allegedly by husband in Char Laxmi Akandbari of Raipur upazila early yesterday over dowry, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Saheda Begum, wife of Anwar Hossain.

AKM Azizur Rahman Miah, officer-in-charge of Raipur police station, said the family members of Saheda’s father-in-law house used to torture her after marriage over dowry.

Following the issue, Saheda had a brawl with her husband on Sunday night. At one stage, Anwar strangulated her to death. On information, police recovered the body and arrested Anwar.

In Kishoreganj, the slit-throat body of a woman was found at her house at Dawkia Latifabad village in Boropool area of Sadar upazila yesterday, reports UNB.

On information, police recovered the body of the woman identified as Parul, 32, wife of Shafiq of the village, this morning, said Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Shawkat Jahan. Later, the body was sent to Kishoreganj Adhunik Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

The incident might be occurred between 3am and 4 am, the OC added.

Police, however, detained four members of victim’s family, including her husband and brother-in-law, for interrogation. Being informed, deceased’s brother started for the spot from Nakhalpara in Dhaka.

800 houses get power connection

JOYPURHAT: A total of 800 houses of Awlai union under Panchbibi upazila of the district have been brought under the rural electrification network by Joypurhat Palli Biddyut Samity, reports BSS.

District Awami League president Advocate Shamsul Alam Dudu, MP formally inaugurated the new connection line as the chief guest at a function held here this morning. The function was held at Kadhali Government Primary School premise. District Awami League General Secretary SM Soliman Ali, DG of Joypurhat Palli Biddyut Samity Abdur Rouf, DGM of Joypurhat Palli Biddyut Samity Shofiul Alam, Panchbibi Upazila Awami League General Secretary Abu Bakr Siddique and among others, spoke.

Joypurhat Palli Biddyut Samity implemented the programme at a cost of Taka 2.18 crore, said DG Abdur Rouf.

Human chain formed protesting college student rape

Sherpur: Students of different colleges in the district on Sunday formed a human chain protesting a rape incident and demanding the immediate arrest of the criminals, reports UNB.

They formed the human chain in front of main gate of the office of Deputy Commissioner (DC).

Later, they submitted memorandum to the DC and Superintendent of Police after hour-long human chain programme.

The protesters demanded immediate arrest of the main accused Shamim Miah, a resident of Surjyodi village, Abdul Bari Chand, chairman of Kamaria union, and his associates.
