British MP calls on DU VC

Paul Scully ,MP, a British Conservative Party politician paid a courtesy call on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-chancellor Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman at his office here on THursday. DU Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Department Chairperson Dr Lafifa Jamal, Professor of the Department of Geography and Environment Nazmun Nahar, Deputy Chairman of Conservative Friends of Bangladesh (CFOB) Abdus Hamid and other leaders of CFOB were present, among others, on the occasion, said a press release here. During the meeting, they discussed various issues including Rohingya crisis.

The DU VC stressed the need for immediate deployment of UN peacekeeping forces in Myanmar to protect Rohingya Muslims as well as civilians.

They also discussed the possibilities of undertaking joint collaborative academic and research programs on ICT, business, entrepreneurship and cyber security by the DU and higher education institutions in the UK, the release also said.

 

Second senate meeting held at BRUR

RANGPUR: The second senate meeting of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) was held recently at the conference room of administrative building on the campus. Vice-chancellor of the university and Chairman of its senate Professor Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah presided over the event, a press release said.

Members of the senate of the university Whip of the Jatiya Sangshad Mahabub Ara Begum Gini MP, HN Ashikur Rahman MP, Tipu Munshi MP, Motahar Hossain MP, Advocate Hosne Ara Lutfa Dalia MP and Member of University Grants Commission Professor Dr Dil Afroza Begum attended the meeting.

Member-secretary of the senate of BRUR and its Registrar Muhammad Ibrahim Kabir conducted the event.

Member of the Planning, Development and Works Committee of BRUR Architect Manjur Kader delivered presentation on the university’s infrastructural development, planning and revised master plan.

In his speech, Professor Dr Kalimullah presented the overall situation of the university.

After discussions on various issues, the senate members approved the revised budget of Taka 39.11-crore for the last 2016-2017 fiscal and Taka 39.81-crore budget for the current 2017-2018 fiscal of the university.

The senate members suggested for convening another special senate meeting within this year for necessary discussion and proper implementation of the revised master plan.

 

Tree plantation campaign at JU

SAVAR: A tree plantation campaign began on Jahangirnagar University campus here on recently.

JU authorities organised the campaign for further beautification of the university and maintaining ecological balance.

Planting a sapling near JU School and College, JU Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Farzana Islam inaugurated the event around 10 am.

Pro-VC Professor Abul Hossain (academic), Pro-VC Professor Amir Hussain (administration), Treasurer Professor Md Manzurul Huq and Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique, among others, were present on the occasion.

Around 500 plants will be planted on different spots on the campus during the campaign.

Literacy knowledge prerequisite for digital Bangladesh, say officials

RANGPUR: Government officials and educationists at a post-rally discussion here have said achieving literacy knowledge is a prerequisite to turn illiterate population into human resources for building a digital Bangladesh.

They came up with the observations in the discussion jointly organised by the district administration and District Non Formal Education (NFE) Bureau in association with different NGOs to observe the International Literacy Day- 2017 recently.

Elaborate programmes, including bringing out of a huge colourful rally followed by the discussion, were chalked out in observance of the day with the theme of ‘Achieve Literacy, Build Digital World.’

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman led the rally participated by officials and executives of different government departments and NGOs, teachers, students, professionals and local elite.

Later, the deputy commissioner attended the discussion held in his conference room as the chief guest with Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Rabiul Islam in the chair.

Police Super Mizanur Rahman, Additional Police Super ABM Zakir Hossain and Saifur Rahman addressed as special guests.

Assistant director of the District NFE Bureau Musfikur Rahman discussed various steps taken by the government in turning the illiterate population into human resources through providing them with literacy knowledge and informal education.

Associate Professor of the Department of Bengali of Begum Rokeya University Dr Abu Saleh Muhammad Wadudur Rahman delivered keynote presentation narrating importance of educating the illiterate population to turn them into human

resources.

Divisional deputy director of the Directorate of Primary Education Mahbub Elahi and Assistant District Education Officer Shamima Noor narrated the tremendous success already achieved by Bangladesh in reducing illiteracy rate.

The chief guest said the government has been implementing massive programmes to provide literacy knowledge and job-oriented education to the illiterate people to further accelerate development in building a middle income digital nation.
