9 killed in Red Crescent relief truck crash

Nine people were killed and 14 more injured as a truck of Bangladesh Red Crescent carrying relief for Rohingya refugees skidded off the road into a paddy field near Chakdala area under Naikhonchhari upazila in Bandarban yesterday. The deceased were identified as Abdullah, 18, son of Md Hamid, Churut Alam,35, son of Nur Mohammad, Sayedul Amin,26, son of Badiul Alam of Chhalimapara, Jalil Ahmed, 40, son of Abul Kalam, Abdullah, 12, son of Siddiqur Rahman, of Bagangona, Mominul Hakim,17 son of Golam Hossain of Ghilatoli, Abdul Mabud, 47, son Moktar Ahmed, Sultan Ahmed 45, son of Md Solainam, of Thandaghari and Sudarshan Barua 45, son of Antu Barua of Barua para of Naikhonchhari uapazila under Bandarban district. Of the injured, 10 were undergoing treatment at Naikhonchhari Upazila Health Complex and four were admitted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. Local administration souces said four of the injured are in a critical condition. Dilip Bonik, deputy commissioner of Bandarban district said six people died on the spot and other three died at Nikhhangchhari Upazila Health Complex. “The accident took place at around 8am when the relief truck skidded off the road to the paddy field,” said Dilip Bonik. Among the accident victims, Abdullah was a fourth grade student of Bagangona Brac Pre-primary School and Mominul Hakim was a fifth grader. The rest were labourers who went to unload relief materials, said local administration sources. No member of Bangladesh Res Crescent was present in the truck. Two trucks laden with relief including rice, water and oil from Ukhiya relief control room were going to Boro Shonkhola of Naikhhangchhari where about 5,000 Rohingyas have taken shelter. Though the first truck could reach the spot, the second one fell off the road, said district Red Crescent Society Secretary AKN Jahangir.
