Gour Gobinda made NSU acting VC
Gour Gobinda Goswami, treasurer of North South University (NSU), has been given the charge of the Vice-Chancellor by the Board of Trustees of NSU, effective from Tuesday as per the clause 31 (6) of the Private University Act 2010. Meanwhile, on health grounds, Amin U Sarkar, vice-chancellor of the university, has taken an extended leave for his treatment in USA, says a press release.
Intra-varsity debate contest ends at ASAUB
A week-long intra-university debate competition of ASA University Bangladesh (ASAUB) concluded on Tuesday, says a press release.
Debate Club of ASAUB organised the competition participated by all the departments of ASAUB. The Department of Law clinched the championship title and the Department of Applied Sociology became therunner-up. Deputy Registrar of ASA University Bangladesh Mohammad Masudur Rahman moderated the programme. Sohrab Hasan, joint editor of Daily Prothom Alo, Ziaur Rahman Chowdhury, coordinator, Prothom Alo Debate Team, Iqbal Hasan, former general secretary, Dhaka University Debating Society (DUDS) and Ahmed Reza, Staff Reporter, Jamuna TV were present as the members of the jury board of the final round. Dalem Ch Barman, vice-chancellor of ASAUB, distributed prizes among the winners as the chief guest of the programme. Md Muinuddin Khan, adviser of ASAUB and Md Khalequzzaman, registrar of ASAUB delivered their welcome speech to the debaters. Iqbal Hossain delivered the vote of thanks in the program.
DU teacher, 4 students get Dean's Award
One teacher of Faculty of Pharmacy of Dhaka University (DU) and four students of different departments under the faculty have been awarded ‘Dean's Award’.
The teacher received the award for his extra-ordinary contribution to research and the students for their outstanding academic results in BPharm. examination of 2013. Two other meritorious students of the Faculty have been awarded gold medal while seven others have received scholarship. DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique distributed certificates, gold medals and scholarships among the awardees as the chief guest at a function at TSC auditorium on Tuesday. Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy M Saiful Islam presided over the function while Pro-VC (Administration) Shahid Akhtar Hossain and Vice President of Bangladesh Pharmacy Council Mosaddek Hossain, Chairman of the Department of Pharmacy Sitesh Chandra Bachar were present.
DU teacher wins int’l award
Ajmery Jaman, lecturer, the Institute of Statistical Research and Training (ISRT), University of Dhaka, won the first prize in the 2015 ISI Jan Tinbergen Awards Competition for young statisticians from developing countries. She received the award for her paper ‘A Bias-Corrected Approach to Rotnitzky Jewell Criteria for Appropriate Correlation Structure Selection in Generalized Estimating Equations’. The work was carried out under the supervision of Mahbub Latif, professor of ISRT. The other collaborators of the work were Abdus S Wahed, University of Pittsburgh, USA and. Wasimul Bari, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, said a DU press release. The Jan Tinbergen Awards are named after the famous Dutch economist Jan Tinbergen (1903-1994) who won the Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences in 1969.
Workshops on plant diseases held
GAZIPUR: Two separate workshops on ‘plant disease diagnosis’ and ‘plant disease management’ were held at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University Auditorium recently, says a press release. Vice-Chancellor of the university Md Mahbubar Rahman was the chief guest and inaugurated the programmes. Treasurer of the university Md Ismail Hossain Mian was the special guest. Md Khurshed Alam Bhuiyan of the Department of Plant Pathology & Sub-Project Manager of Establishment of Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic, BSMRAU presided over the ceremony. The objectives of the training programmes are trained up the graduate students of BSMRAU on Plant Disease Diagnosis and Plant Disease Management for faculty members.
