Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) is going to organise an evening of Hindustani classical vocal music by Pandit Swarnamoy Chakraborty at Kabi Sufia Kamal Auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum, Shahbagh, on 23 September. Born in Chittagong, Pandit Swarnamoy Chakraborty is a reputed exponent of classical vocal music in Bangladesh. He was initially inspired and got trained in Music by his father Late Horiranjan Chakraborty and later from illustrious teachers such as Ustad Nirad Baran Barua, Sangeet Acharya Prafulla Kumar Sen, Sangeet Acharya Subod Gongopadaya and the eminent vocalist Pandit Arun Bhaduri. He received his graduation and post-graduation degrees in music from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata.
Pandit Swarnamoy Chakraborty is credited with numerous analytical writings on classical music. He has received several awards which include award from Gunaras Piya Sangeet Shabha, Raipur, Madhya Pradesh in 2013, from the Chief Minister of Tripura in 2014 and from Kalamandala Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in 2015. He has given excellent performances in many musical conferences in Bangladesh as well as different cities of India like West Bengal, Tripura, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Delhi.
In order to fulfil his mission of refinement of minds through classical vocal music, he and other like-minded music enthusiasts have founded an organization of classical music ‘Sadarang Uchchanga Sangeet Parishad Bangladesh’ for which he has been tirelessly working for more than two decades. He is currently teaching in the Department of Music at Chittagong University, Bangladesh.
