Two-day ‘Natya Utsab 2017’ set to kick off at DU today

A two-day theatre festival titled ‘Natya Utsab 2017’ is set to kick off  at the TSC auditorium of Dhaka University today. Dhaka University Natya Sangsad has organised the festival for the first time. Culture Minister Asaduzzaman Noor will be present as the chief guest on the inaugural evening, while the chief adviser of Natya Snagsad and Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman will inaugurate the festival today.

A stage performance ‘Roots and Wings’, by Department of Theater and Performance Studies of DU, will be staged after the inauguration ceremony of the festival at the TSC auditorium today. Abdur Razzak, a master’s student of the department, has directed the play.

Tomorrow, on the last day of the festival, guest troupe Open Space Theatre will bring their maiden play ‘12 Angry Men’—a cult classic courtroom drama on stage at the same venue.

Directed by M Arifur Rahman, the play ‘12 Angry Men’ is based on the teleplay written by Reginald Rose.

A 12-man jury is sent to begin deliberations in the first-degree murder trial of an 18-year-old man accused in the stabbing death of his father, where a guilty verdict means an automatic death sentence. ‘12 Angry Men’ explores many techniques of consensus-building and the difficulties encountered in the process, among a group of men whose range of personalities adds intensity and conflict.

Ticket worth 50 taka and 30 taka are available in front of the venue.
