Woman killed ‘by stepson’

A woman was killed allegedly by her stepson at village Kellatajpur in Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh district on Thursday.
The deceased was Halima Khatun, 48, second wife of Syed Ali Munshi of Kellatajpur.
Quoting local sources Morshedul Hasan Khan, officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Gouripur Police Station said since Halema’s marriage she was often being tortured by her step children over family feud related to land and other issues. On Thursday afternoon Mohammad Enayet, 25, a stepson of Halima locked in an altercation and at one stage, he hacked Halima with a sharp weapon, leaving her injured critically.
She was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) where she died around 9pm, said the OC. On information, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to MMCH morgue for autopsy.
Police detained Enayet for his alleged involvement in the killing. He was produced before a Mymensingh court yesterday that sent him to jail, said the OC.
Md Shamim Mia, victim’s son from her first side lodged a case with Gouripur Police Station accusing three people including Enayet, his father Syed Ali Munshi and a brother yesterday.
Two ‘robbers’ held with arms

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two suspected members of an inter-district robber gang from Phulchari upazila of Gaibandha district on Thursday.
The arrestees were identified as Shahidul Islam, 34, and Hafizur Rahman, 38.
Tipped off, a team of RAB-12 from Bogra conducted a simultaneous drive in the char areas along the Jamuna River and arrested two robbers along with one pistol, two pipe guns, two cartridges, five bullets and a sharp weapon, said Rab at a press briefing.
RAB officials said a gang of robbers had long been involved in committing robberies in the char areas of four districts—Kazipur in Sirajganj district, Bogra and Jamalpur districts and Phulchhari upazila of Gaibadha district.
The arrestees were wanted in many cases, they said.
Driver killed in road accident

The driver of a covered van was killed and three others injured in a road accident at Sehratoil in Kalihati upazila of Tangail district yesterday morning.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. Asabur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kalihati police station, said a Northern region-bound speedy truck hit a covered van from behind around 7am, leaving the covered van driver dead on the spot and three others injured.
Police seized the killer truck but its driver managed to flee the scene.
The injured were taken to Tangail General Hospital.
3 Benapole customs officials withdrawn for irregularities
Benapole: Three customs officials were withdrawn on Thursday night from Benapole International Check Post on charge of irregularities and corruption, reports UNB.
Benapole check post checking centre revenue officer Humayun Kabir said the withdrawn officers include revenue officer Kamrul Islam, assistant revenue officers Azizul Haque and Sultan Mia.
Customs sources said the three officers had been taking bribe from passengers in the check post for long.
Sources concerned said the trio reportedly took Tk 2000 as bribe from Moshahraf Hossin Mintu, a Bangladeshi, who returned from Kalkata on September 12. Later, he filed a complaint to Benapole customs commissioner Md Shawkat Hossain. They were withdrawn as evidence was found against them in primary investigation.
Rice-laden trawler capsizes
Munshiganj: A trawler capsized in the Padma River with 2600 sacks of rice on board in Lauhajong upazila on Thursday afternoon, reports UNB.
The trawler ‘Rahi Durgapur’ collided with an under-construction pillar of Padma Bridge around 12:30 pm while heading towards Chandpur from Faridpur carrying the consignment of rice, said Mawa Naval Police Camp in-charge sub inspector Sarjit Kumar Ghosh.
After the collision, the trawler overturned and capsized in the river, Sarjit said.
