Two ‘robbers’ killed in Mymensingh

Two persons, alleged to be robbers, were killed in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh early yesterday (Monday). One of them died after he was beaten up by a mob, and the other was killed in a gunfight with the police.

One was identified as Robbani, 27, hailing from Bogra, while the identity of the other, aged about 30, could not be known at the time of filing of this report.

On being tipped off that a gang of eight to 10 robbers was planning to commit a robbery, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police, led by its officer-in-charge (OC) Md Ashiqur Rahman, started raiding the upazila early yesterday, said Syed Nurul Islam, the superintendent of police (SP) in Mymensingh.

The police team found a large gathering of some 200 people in the Boilor area, where the gang had allegedly attempted to commit the robbery. Being chased by the people, the gang members fled the scene in two pickup vans, said the SP.

As one of them got separated from the gang, the people caught him after a long chase and beat him up mercilessly. He died on the spot.

Hearing the news, the police team chased the gang and learnt that the robbers were staying in the Jhitka area of Trishal. When the police  reached the spot, the gang members started firing at them. The police too fired 23 rounds. During the gunfight, Robbani sustained bullet wounds and died on the spot.

Other members of the gang managed to escape. The police seized a one-shooter gun and one round of bullet from the spot.

The bodies were sent to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Robbani was an accused in a case of killing two persons after looting 10 cows from a farm at Gopalpur village in Mymensingh Sadar upazila on August 21, said Mohammad Noor-e-Alam, the additional superintendent of police (ASP) in Mymensingh. A case is yet to be filed in this regard.
