60km tailback on Tangail highway

Commuters on the Dhaka-Tangail highway had to suffer immensely yesterday as they had to face 60km congestion due to a huge pressure of vehicles. Vehicles were moving slowly for a stretch of about 60km from Chandra of Gazipur to Elenga in Tangail since Friday evening due to a heavy rush and a number of vehicles going out of order at different points of the highway added to the woe, said sources at police and witnesses.

The situation became worse yesterday morning as impatient drivers tried to maneuver their vehicles by whatever means they could after being stuck for about 8-10 hours, said Ataur Rahman Station, commander of Fire Service and Civil Defense at Mirzapur. This also resulted in accidents as at least 15 people were killed on the highway within 24 hours till yesterday evening.  While filing this report around 6pm, vehicles were still moving at a snail’s pace. Officer-in-Charge of Mirzapur Police Station Main Uddin said that they were trying to ease the congestion.
