5 killed in road accidents

Five people were killed in separate road accidents yesterday, report agencies.

Our Jessore correspondent reports: Two people were killed and two others injured when a private car collided with a truck at Chhatiantola in Sadar upazila early yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Moulana Abu Jafar Jessorei, 32, vice- president of Jessore Sadar upazila unit of Islami Andolan Bangladesh of Sadar upazila and Hefez Borhanuddin, 30, son of Nurpur Dakatia area in Sadar upazila.

Wahiduzzaman, inspector (investigation) of Bagharpara Police Station said that the truck collided with the private car carrying them around 5:00 am, leaving four passengers injured.

On information, police and fire service men rescued them but Jafar and Borhanuddin died on the way to Jessore General Hospital.

Two other injured people were admitted to Sadar hospital, said Ranjit Kumar Barua, officer-in-charge of Jessore Sadar Model Police Station.

In Sirajganj: A 30-year-old woman was killed and 13 others were injured as two buses collided head-on at Kashem intersection in the west side of Bangabandhu bridge approach road in Kamarkhand upazila yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Laiju Khatun, hailed from Chandira in Phulchhari upazila of Gaibandha. The accident took place when a North Bengal-bound bus of Rekha Paribahan collided head-on with a bus of 'Keya Paribahan' coming from opposite direction around 5:15 am, leaving a woman dead on the spot and 13 others injured, said Abdul Hamid, deputy assistant director of Sirajganj Fire Service and Civil Defence.

On information, fire service men rushed to the spot and sent the injured to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital. Of the injured, the condition of three people is critical, the fire service officer added.

In Bagerhat: A man was killed as a fish-laden pickup van hit a stationed truck at Shahbari on Bagerhat-Pirojpur road in Morelganj upazila yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Monir Hossian, 26, helper of the pickup van, hailed from Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur.

A fish-laden pickup van hit a timber-leaden truck, which was kept stationed in Shahpara area since Eid day as it went out of service, from behind yesterday morning, leaving its helper dead on the spot, said Rashedul Alam, OC of Morelganj Police Station.

In Comilla: A police constable was killed and four other people were injured in a road accident in Charbakar area on Comilla-Sylhet regional highway in Debidwar upazila on Thursday night.

Police said constable Hossian Sarker, 32, of Pomkara village in Brahmanpara upazila, was returning to his work station Rangamati Police Lines after Eid vacation.
