Surendra Kumar Sinha yesterday said he could become the Chief Justice (CJ) because Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had brought independence to the country that also ensured the development of remote areas. At the same time, the CJ called for the modernisation of the country’s laws in keeping with the present global changes brought about by economic development.

He made the comments at a function to lay the foundation stone of building number 1 of the Moulvibazar District Bar Association (MDBA).

Citing the siphoning of crores of taka abroad from the Bangladesh Bank reserve through cybercrimes, the CJ said: “Neither our judges nor our lawyers are well educated on cybercrime laws. I urge the government to modernise the country’s laws and make them befitting to the times considering all these factors.”

“We need to study further and plug the brain drain as thousands of brilliant boys and girls are going abroad for higher education every year. Later, they become citizens there and do not return home,” he added. The CJ urged wealthy people

to come forward to help the government in setting up higher educational institutions of international standards to stop the brain drain of these talented youths.

MDBA president advocate Ranjit Kumar Ghose chaired the function, which was conducted by MBDA general secretary advocate Mizanur Rahman. District and sessions judge Sheikh Abu Taher addressed the gathering as special guest.

Deputy commissioner Mohammad Tofail Islam and chief judicial magistrate AGM AL Masud, among others, also spoke at the function.
