Businessman rescued; 10 ‘kidnappers’ arrested

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) yesterday arrested 10 alleged kidnappers and rescued one abducted businessman from Tejgaon industrial area of the capital.

The victim was identified as Zahirul Haque, a businessman, while  the arrestees were identified as Ismail Sheikh, 27, Md Maksud,22, Zahirul Islam, 20, Md Arif, 20, Bahauddin, 20, Milon Hossain, 15, Md Arman,21, Shariful,19, Tofael Hossain,28, and Khairul Islam, 23.
Talking to The Independent, Lt Col SM Masud Rana, director of RAB-2, confirmed the incident.
Faria Akter, wife of the victim, said  on Friday, her husband came out of his residence to say Juma prayer  at a mosque in Tejgaon area.
“As he did not return home even after several hours, we filed a general diary with Tejgaon Police Station in this connection,” she added.
Around 10pm on the day of the incident, some unidentified people made a phone call to the victim’s family members and demanded Tk15 lakh as ransom for his release.
The callers also threatened to kill Zahirul if the money was not paid. After receiving the complaint, the elite force conducted a raid at a flat near Tejgaon Mohila College at Purba Tejturi Bazar around 4pm. RAB men rescued the abducted businessman and arrested the alleged kidnappers from there, said Lt Col Rana. The victim told integrators that once Zahirul  Islam, one of the arrestees, used to be his business partner and he had lent his another business partner Kalam Tk15 for business purpose.
