Students of public and private medical colleges staged a demonstration in the city yesterday to press for reintroducing ‘carry on’ system in the medical colleges that would allow them to continue with professional courses even after failing in a subject.
Students of Rajshahi Medical College (RMC), Islami Bank Medical College, Shah Makhdum Medical College and Barind Medical College jointly formed a human chain in front of RMC for an hour since 11am. Later, they handed over a memorandum to the principals of the respective medical colleges.
The demonstrating students at a rally said the medical students earlier under the “carry on” system were allowed to attend classes in the next academic year even though they failed in one subject in the professional examinations.
In that case, that would attend the examination of the subject six months later. The “carry on” system was cancelled after the BMDC announced new curriculum in 2013.
They noted that the cancellation of the system would create an additional pressure on the medical colleges to run a separate batch for those who failed in one subject while the students would also suffer year loss.
Talking to the journalists, Dr Nawshad Ali, vice principal of RMC, said around 40 per cent medical students come out unsuccessful in one subject at RMC and with the “carry on” system, they would continue study with normal academic practices.
