At least 200 BNP activists of Raipura upazila have been staying away from home over the past two months fearing attacks from ruling party men.
Faijur Rahman, vice president of BNP district unit, and other supporters of the party have been subjected to harassment and torture at the hands of Monjur Ehali, chairman of Mirzapur union, also an AL leader, and his men, said some victim BNP activists.
According to cases filed in this regard, Monjur Ehali and his men attacked the BNP supporters several times, and looted and damaged their houses.
Victim Faijur Rahman claimed that the AL activists attacked the houses three times from May 13 to July 22 and allegedly looted furniture, ornaments, cash money, poultry birds, fish, cattle-head, paddy and rice.
The victim families have taken shelter in different villages and Narsingdi town. They are passing their days in miserable condition. Some of them are facing scarcity of food.
Obaidul Haque, an aide of Faijur Rahman, had gone to Raipura police station for filling case; but the OC there did not register any case against Chairman Monjur Elahi and his men.
Later, Faijur Rahman and his supporters filed four cases with senior judicial Magistrate Court against UP Chairman Monjur Ehali and his supporters.
BNP leader Faijur Rahman and other BNP supporters filed separate petitions to the ministries of home and local government, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Deputy Commissioner and Police Superintendent of Narsingdi against UP Chairman Monjur Elahi and his supporters.
Azharul Islam, Officer in-Charge Raipura police station said a police camp has been set up at Peerpur village for maintaining law and order. Police are trying to arrest the culprits, who have attacked BNP leader and supporters houses.
UP Chairman Monjur Ehali said the inhabitants of Peerpur were angry with BNP leader Faijur Rahman and his supporters for their subversive activities in the locality.
Victimised by Faijur Rahman, they attacked him and his supporters, looted their houses and property. “Neither he or nor his supporters are involved in the attack, I am innocent,” Monjur Ehali said.
