Five series blast cases in Dhaka await verdict

Although 12 years have elapsed, five cases relating to series blasts in the capital city on August 17 in 2005 have been awaiting for disposal. The nationwide August 17, 2005 blasts carried out by the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) had killed two people and wounded 50 others, reports BSS.

In the capital city, the JMB on that day exploded bombs while public prosecutor Advocate Abdullah Abu of Dhaka Metropolitan said 18 cases were lodged with different police stations in connections of these blasts. ”Trials in four cases have already been disposed of and five other cases are under trial while final reports in rest of the nine cases were submitted,” he also said.

”Some 37 JMB operatives were sentenced different jail terms in four cases,” he said adding that a Dhaka court sentenced 17 years imprisonment to three JMB operatives in the latest verdict delivered on July 27 last. Of the five under trial cases, four are now at the stage of deposition while the remaining one at the stage of argument, he added.

Police said 159 cases were lodged at different parts of the country relating to the series blast on August 17, 2005. Police submitted charge sheets in 149 cases against 1106 JMB men while final reports in 10 other cases have submitted.

Trial in 93 cases has already been completed in which 334 people have been sentenced with different jail terms while trial in 56 cases against 400 JMB operatives is going on.

Twenty seven accused in the serial blast have already been handed down with death penalty and eight of them have already been hanged.

A total of 349 accused in the serial blast have already been acquitted of the charges.
