Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina met President M Abdul Hamid at his official residence Bangabhaban yesterday and apprised him of the overall situation of the country, including the state of flood in the northern districts, according to the Bangabhaban sources. Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq, Attorney General Mahbub-e-Alam, among others were present during the meeting at Bangabhaban in the evening.
The meeting was held in the wake of the recent development centring the Appellate Division verdict scrapping the 16th Amendment to the constitution.
Earlier, on Monday, Obaidul Quader met the president and informed him about his meeting with Chief Justice (CJ) Surendra Kumar Sinha. During the meet, he had briefed the president about the Awami League's stance on the Supreme Court's decision, Quader said.
The meeting of Obaidul Quader with the CJ has already given birth to a debate in the political arena.
After yesterday’s call on the president by the premier, press secretary to the president Joynal Abedin told The Independent that the overall situation in the country including the flood came up in the discussion.
He said the PM informed the president that they have required relief to face the ongoing flood situation.
“The government has taken all out effort to provide relief materials to the flood victims,” the president’s press secretary said quoting the PM.
In reply, the president urged the premier to take help from the public representatives asides from the administration to
face the flood situation.
Meanwhile, quoting thepPresident’s press secretary, the state run news agency BSS says that Sheikh Hasina apprised the president of the overall flood situation across the country and various steps taken to overcome this natural calamity with sufficient stock of food grains.
The premier informed the president that the local administration as well as the public representatives were given directives to take necessary steps to stand by the flood affected people.
Advising the authorities concerned to involve the people's representatives with the process to reduce the sufferings of the flood-hit people, the president called for ensuring proper distribution of relief goods among the actual victims.
Sheikh Hasina reached Bangabhaban at 7:30pm. On her arrival, the prime minister was received by President Hamid.
The principal secretary of the Prime Minister's Office and secretaries concerned to the president were present on the occasion.
