AL in favour of filing review petition

The ruling Awami League, yesterday,  endorsed a proposal to file a review petition against the Supreme Court verdict that scrapped the parliament's power to remove the SC judges on grounds of misconduct or incapacity. The decision was taken at a joint meeting of the AL Presidium and Secretaries of the Central Committee at the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence Ganabhaban yesterday night.

Talking to this correspondent the party presidium member Abdul Matin Khasru said, “We have decided to form a law committee that will find out the objectionable and irrelevant observations made by the chief justice in the judgement and then we will go for legal action against the verdict.”

When contacted, AL joint general secretary Abdur Rahman MP, said they will file a review petition against the verdict or file an appeal to expunge the objectionable and irrelevant observations of the judgement.

He said the party president Sheikh Hasina listened to her party leaders’ opinions over the issue.

AL presidium member Pijush Kanti Bhattacharya said they became stunned at the Chief Justice’s observations especially on the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman during the

Liberation.  In the hour-long meeting started from 8pm, the party leaders spoke over the verdict. They said there is no way to accept some of the observations of the judgement, meeting sources said.

Earlier, in her introductory remarks at a joint meeting, the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged people to remain alert against those who opposed the country's independence, saying their evil souls are still in Bangladesh and want to strike whenever they get a chance.

"Those who opposed the independence and those who didn't want the War of Liberation had been engaged in genocide, rape, looting and arson attacks. Their evil souls are still in Bangladesh and want to strike whenever they get a chance. The Bangalee nation will have to remain alert against them," she said.

Sheikh Hasina said she never thought of changing her own fate and amassing wealth while being in power; rather she always wants to ensure people's overall welfare.

The Prime Minister said the common people alongside farmers and workers have now regained relief and peace, and their dreams of having a better life is being materialised as Awami League is steering the country forward.

But, she apprehended that the country will again plunge into an abyss of terrorism, militancy, looting, nepotism, corruption, commission trade, money-laundering, and upsurge of 'Hawa' and 'Khowab Bhaban' if others like BNP-Jamaat clique grabs power as they did in 2001.

Directing the AL leadership to further strengthen the party, Hasina asked them to take a firm vow to materialise the dreams and expectations of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

AL presidium members and secretaries of the central committee attended the meeting.
