Youth sentenced to death over N’ganj 5-murder

A court in Narayanganj yesterday sentenced a young man to death in a case filed in connection with the murder of five members of a family centring extramarital affair at Baburail in Narayanganj city on January 15 in 2016, reports UNB. The lone convicted young man was Mahfuzur Rahman. Besides, the court also fined him Tk 5,000.

According to prosecution, Taslima Begum, 35, wife of Shafiqul Islam, a private car driver in capital Dhaka, their children Sumaiya, 5, Shantu, 10, Taslima’s brother Morshedul, 22, and Lamia, 25, who was married to Shafiqul’s brother Sharif, the five members of the family were found dead in their house of the area on January 16.

Shafiqul Islam, husband of deceased Taslima Begum, filed the case against unidentified miscreants with Narayanganj Sadar Police Station on January 17.

Later, police arrested Mahfuz, nephew of Shafiqul and showed him arrested in the case on January 18. Mahfuz gave statement confessing that he killed the five persons all alone on January 21. On April 7, police pressed a charge sheet against Mahfuj in connection with the killing.

He murdered all the victims including his aunts and children by turn. Mahfuz, the lone killer, was involved in the killing to take revenge of being rebuked as he had an illicit relation with his aunt Lamia Akhter, wife of Shafiqul’s brother. After examining all records and 23 witnesses, district and sessions judge Hosne Ara Akhter handed down the verdict.
