Chandpur: Born without sight in his eyes, Saiful Islam, a student of Mirpur Bangla Government College attained GPA -5 in this year's HSC exam from Dhaka Board (Humanities group).
The gifted young boy has also fought poverty for most of his life. Following his stellar HSC results, he is now moving from pillar to post looking for help and assistance to continue his higher education in a public university.
For this success, he says, he is grateful to Mamtazuddin-Director, Chandpur DPOD (Disabled People's Organisation to Development), his teachers and especially his hostel-super Majharul Huque Masud, who extended him their kind co-operation and proper guidance.
Saiful hails from Miji Bari at Dakshin Koroitoli village under Paikpara union in Faridganj Upazila of the district. His parents are day labourer Abul Kalam Miji and housewife Rasheda Begum.
Saiful's parents were in no position to even provide for the basic costs of his education. It was Momtazuddin and local teachers who encouraged meritorious Saiful to carry on his studies in view of his merit.
Mother Rasheda also encouraged her son "to be self- reliant through education instead of a blind beggar for life".
Momtazuddin also got him admitted to Dalalbazar Integrated School for the Blind in the neighbouring Roypur Upazila under Luxmipur district and then he passed the SSC Exam 2015 under Comilla Board obtaining A grade. In 2015, he had his admission in the HSC class at Mirpur Government Bangla College, Dhaka.
Talking to this correspondent, Saiful said, "I am determined to take higher education at the DU". But his poor parents can hardly afford to send him for an admission exam, let alone pursuing his studies in the capital.
