Damaged bridge poses risk to users

About 25,000 people of 15 villages have been suffering in Bahubal and Chunarughat upazilas of Habiganj as the communication through Staiajur-Mirpur road has become very risky due to dilapidated condition of a bridge over a canal. The bridge was located in Jujnal area under Bahubal upazila which is adjacent to Chunarughat upazila border. According to the locals, the villagers mostly from Tungeshwar, Baroaulia, Daspara, Khilbamai, Dattapara, Satiajuri, Kalapur and Golgaon are dependent on Staiajur-Mirpur road to communicate with Mirpur Bazar as well as Habiganj district headquarters. Many parts of the bridge in Jujnal area got damaged as over-loaded vehicles used to ply on the bridge randomly, they added. Locals demanded repair of the bridge which is in bad shape for one and a half year. Farmers of Chunarughat and Bahubal areas have to cross extra distance of 10 km to transport their produce to Mirpur Bazar. As a result, they are losing interest in farming due to extra transport cost. Besides, the students of this area go to their educational institutes amid risks through the damaged bridge. Md Abdul Awal, union parishad chairman of Mirpur said they are trying to start repair works of the bridge which will require approximately Tk 20 lakhs.  “We will complete the repair works rapidly when the Local Government and Rural Development LGRD ministry will allocate the fund,” he added.
