The upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Biral urged the teachers of different educational institutions to make their campus smoking-free to ensure mental and physical growth of the students. Biral upazila UNO Abdullah Al Khairum, also president of managing committee of Biral Pilot High School, was addressing at an inaugural programme of a newly built three-storey building of the school on Tuesday. Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, lawmaker of Dinajpur-2 constituency, attended the programme as chief guest. Teachers of all high schools in Biral upazila attended the programme. “It really looks odd while a teacher smokes in school complex. It’s more irritating when it happens in presence of a student”, he said. The UNO said the practice can be injurious for physical and mental health of students. Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury urged the teachers to monitor their students’ activities. “Students spend a long time at their schools; so, a teacher has a responsibility to keep a watch on them”, he said.
