Drug peddler shot in ‘gunfight’

A drug peddler sustained bullet wounds in a gunfight with police at Champatali in Panchbibi upazila yesterday afternoon. Four policemen were also injured in the incident. Police said the injured Sajal Biswas, 35, of Biswas Para area in Joypurhat town, was a drug peddler with previous criminal records. Police said a team of police when arrested Sajal after conducting raid at Champatali on Joypurhat-Hili road, Sajal’s associates numbering 20-25 equipped with arms and weapons attacked police and tried to snatch him. The gang opened fire on police, forcing the law enforcers to fire back triggering a gunfight. Sajal received gunshot wounds during the exchange of fire. Sub-inspector (SI) Zillur Rah­man, SI Aminur Rahman, ASI Abu Zafar Saleh and constable Saju were also injured in the incident. He was rushed to the Joypurhat hospital, but was later shifted to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital in Bogra. Injured police personnel were taken to Panchbibi Upazila Health Complex. Police filed a case in this connection with Panchbibi police station.
