Case filed
against JnU
students

A case has been filed against 30–40 unknown students of Jagannath University (JnU) and the driver and helper of a double-decker bus, who beat up a traffic sergeant for stopping the vehicle while it tried to proceed by taking the wrong side of the road. Kaiser Hamid incurred the wrath of the JnU students as he tried to stop two university buses driving on the wrong side. Later, he filed the case with Ramna police station yesterday afternoon. The officer-in-charge of Ramna model police station, Moshiur Rahman, confirmed that the case had been filed around 1pm against some 30–40 unknown students of JnU. "The case has been filed against some law-breaking JnU students for attacking a policeman and preventing him from discharging his duty," he said.

Rifat Rahman Shamim, deputy commissioner of traffic (South), described the incident as unexpected, saying that legal steps were being taken against those involved.

Talking to The Independent, Shamim said there was traffic pressure on city roads, but everyone should be patient and show respect for the law. “There will be no leniency towards those who take the law into their own hands,” he added.

Mehdi Hasan, additional deputy commissioner of traffic (South), said those who attacked the police sergeant on duty would be identified by scanning CCTV footage. He also said the sergeant had requested the JnU students to cross the intersection a little later as VVIP movement was going on. “But the students were very adamant not to follow the directive of the police officer and assaulted him. It was regretful,” he added. Sources said the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, especially senior traffic officers, were taking the incident very seriously.
