A woman was strangled to death allegedly by her brother following a dispute over repayment of borrowed money at Bangshal in the old part of the capital yesterday morning. Police identified the victim as Asma Akhter, 45, wife of Jahangir Hossain. According to the victim’s brother-in-law, Selim, Asma’s brother Akbar Hossain, along with his two associates, entered her flat around 8:30am yesterday. Sources said when neighbours asked him the reason of his visit that early, Akbar said he came to take Tk 50,000 from Asma that he had lent her few months ago. However, Asma’s son, Sumon, said his mother had lent a huge amount of money to his uncle, and she had been pressuring him to repay the loan. An altercation took place between the siblings, and at one stage, Akbar allegedly strangled Asma to death. The assailants fled the place when Rabbi, grandson of Asma, screamed for help. Before leaving the flat, Akbar took some gold ornaments from Asma’s body, the sources said. ASI Sentu Chandra Das, in-charge of DMC police camp, said the body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. No case was filed till the filing of this report at 7:05pm.
