3 killed in Natore truck plunge
NATORE: Three people were killed as a truck plunged into a roadside ditch at Kodimchilan of Lalpur upazila on Natore-Pabna highway on Thursday, reports UNB.
The identities of the deceased were not available immediately.
Officer-in-charge of Natore Highway Police GM Samsun Nur said the Pabna-bound truck fell into the ditch around 3:30 pm after it overturned on the road, killing the trio on the spot.
Later, firefighters and highway police recovered the bodies.
Minor boy killed in landslide
COX'S BAZAR: A five-year-old boy was killed in a landslide caused by heavy downpour in Ukhia upazila of the district on Wednesday evening, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Rabbi, son of Mohammad Sarwar of Anjuman Para in Palongkhali union of the upazila.
Gafur Uddin Chowdhury, chairman of Palongkhali union parisad, said that Rabbi died after a chunk of hill collapsed on him around 6:00 pm when he went to backyard of the house. The family used to live at the foot of the hill, the UP chairman added.
Heavy rain and the onrush water from the hills triggered a flood in seven upazilas of the district, marooning around 400,000 inhabitants.
10 arrested in Magura drive
MAGURA: Police in special drives arrested at least 10 people accused in different cases from four upazilas of the district during the last 24 hours till Thursday morning, reports UNB.
According to Magura police control room, among the arrestees, six were arrested in Sadar upazila, two in Shalikha and two others in Mohammadpur upazilas.
Most of the arrestees are warranted accused in different cases filed in their respective police station for involving in various criminal activities.
The arrestees were placed before a court here this morning. Investigation is going on against the arrestees, police said.
Man killed in rival attack
CHAPAINAWABGANJ: A man was killed in an attack by his rivals following a dispute over demarcation of a land at Gogla Dihitola village in Gomostapur upazila on Wednesday, reports UNB.
SM Zakaria, officer-in-charge of Gomostapur Police Station, said Abu Bakkar, 45, and his neighbour Tota Mia had long been at loggerheads centring demarcation of their dwelling houses' boundary.
On Wednesday morning, an altercation ensued between Abu Bakkar and Tota over the issue. At one stage, Tota hit Abu Bakkar with an iron rod on his head, leaving him critically injured.
Later, Abu Bakkar died on his way to hospital.
2 minor siblings drown
SHERPUR: Two minor siblings drowned in a water body (doba) at Balughata-Taranakandi village in Nalitabari upazila on Wednesday, reports UNB.
The deceased were identified as Tajel Miah, 7, and his younger brother Tanvir Miah, sons of Lalchan Miah of the village. Police and locals said Tajel and Tanvir fell into the water body while playing beside it near the house at noon and drowned.
Later, locals recovered the two bodies from the water.
CNG driver hacked to death
TANGAIL: A CNG run auto-rickshaw driver was hacked to death by some unidentified assailants in Sadar upazila Wednesday night, reports BSS.
The deceased was identified as Raton Chandra Barman, 35. Officer-in-Charge of Tangail Model Thana Nazmul Haque Bhuiyan said a gang of miscreants hacked Raton by sharp weapons in Duler Char Aadrasa area around 11:45pm.
Being informed by locals, police rescued Raton in critical condition and admitted him to Tangail Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Sundarbans pirate chief held
BARGUNA: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested the chief of a pirate gang named 'Guru Bahini' from Chandpai range of Sundarbans in the district on Wednesday, reports BSS.
The identity of the pirate chief could not be known immediately. RAB personnel arrested the chief of Guru Bahini with one of his associate, said Major Adnan of RAB-8 over phone. RAB men also recovered four guns, one LG and 63 rounds of bullet from their position, he added
Sewing machines distributed
MYMENSIGH: A total of 22 sewing machines were distributed free of cost among 22 distress women in Muktagachha upazila of the district yesterday, reports BSS.
Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) distributed the sewing machines under Annual Development Programme (ADP) with a view to helping them to enhance their income.
Salahuddin Ahamad Mukti MP formally distributed the sewing machines among the trained women at a simple ceremony held at the upazila UNO office as the chief guest.
One killed in road accident
JESSORE: A motorcyclist was killed and his co-rider injured as a truck crashed into their motorbike in Rupdia-Cawlia area on Jessore-Khulna Highway under Sadar upazila of the district on Wednesday evening, reports BSS.
The deceased was identified as Shawon Khan,28, a medical promotion officer and son of Asaduzzaman Khan of Dihi village of the district.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Model Police Station AKM Azmal Huda said the accident occurred in the area around 7pm when Khulna-bound speeding truck hit the motorcycle, leaving Shawon dead on the spot and pillion passenger Sazal injured.
Police rushed to the spot and recovered the body.
A case was filed in this connection, the OC added.
