Yunnan makes rules to protect world heritage of Chengjiang fossil site

On July 1, the Regulations of Yunnan Province on the Conservation of the World Natural Heritage of Chengjiang Fossil Site comes into force, according to the Standing Committee of Yunnan Provincial People’s Congress. After the “Regulations” goes into effect, the construction of new hotels, sanatoriums and other buildings and the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources are strictly prohibited within the Chengjiang Fossil Site Conservation Area.

The World Natural Heritage of Chengjiang Fossil Site is located in Chengjiang County, Yuxi City, Yunnan Province. It is known for the most concentrated, best preserved and most abundant early Cambrian paleontological fossils in the world. As an iconic heritage site of the life records of the Cambrian period, it was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2012. Currently, the province boasts five world heritage sites, namely the Stone Forest, Three Parallel Rivers, Lijiang Ancient Town, Honghe Hani Rice Terraces and Chengjiang Fossil Site. Up to now, all the Five world heritage sites in Yunnan Province have been put under the protection of local laws and regulations.
