Indefinite bus strike has been called off yesterday morning from all the internal and long routes after 22 hours. Sources said that after getting assurance from police administration both the group including Barisal district bus owners group and transport labor association called off their strike at 11AM. Barisal District Bus Owners’ group and Road Transport Workers Associations jointly called strike from Sunday 1PM demanding punishment of the Alfa-mahendra workers who force to stop plying bus on Gournadi- poysharhat route yesterday and attacked on the bus workers. Facing with the reality, SP Barisal had a talk with the bus owners and workers` leaders at 10am yesterday to manage a negotiation.
After the assurance from the district administration the strike was called off to stop plying of legal transports in the road and highway in Barisal district. The strike however extended in Barisal for the entire internal and long route from last night protesting attack on the bus labors by three wheeler owners and drivers. None of the bus left from Barisal Nathullabad and Rupatoli bus stand till 11am. Md. Aftab Hossain, president of Barisal district bus owners group, at 7:30 PM yesterday told the journalists that the indefinite strike has been extended to all routes connecting Barisal as they failed to get any response from the concerned sides including administration and three wheeler owners association.
Facing the realities mass sufferings increased in different parts of Barisal as owners and workers of three and four wheelers are in logger heads over imposing restriction on plying three wheelers on highway from Sunday. On the other hand, Alfa-Mahendra workers and owners blocked Barisal-Dhaka highway at Icladi points today at 10pm for two hours. They hold procession and called to continue their program till their demands were met. In different areas of the region imposing restriction against moving three wheelers without arranging alternative short distance transportation for non-highway destinations, made people almost stranded at different points. On the other hand, agitated owners and workers of three wheelers also created obstacle against movement of four wheelers on non-highway roads and protesting that owners and workers called strike. Over this dispute sudden bus strike started in all the routes of Barisal from Sunday noon and night.
The strike was called by Barisal district bus owners group and workers associations protesting about creating obstacles by three wheelers owners and workers against plying buses on Gournadi-Poisarhut route. Md. Aftab Hossain, president of Barisal district bus owners group, said three wheeler owners and workers are protesting against High Court order, plying three wheelers on highway, stopped buses on Barisal-Poisarhut route from Sunday morning.
The situation did not develop upto Sunday evening, so the bus strike extended to all routes connecting Barisal, Aftab cautioned. Then again owners and workers of three wheelers associations also led by pro AL leaders, blocked Barisal -Dhaka highway on Gournadi point on Monday morning demanding permission of plying of three wheelers on highway. S M Rafikul Islam, a leader of three wheelers association, said ‘it’s not because of plying of three wheelers, but operating four wheelers by untrained and unskilled workers, unfitness of vehicles, condition of roads and highways causes most of the fatal accidents`. Aftab Hossain, president of district bus owners’ group, said `As per traffic management rules, high and low speed vehicles should not ply on same roads and routes to avoid fatal accidents`. He claimed that without any registration, fitness certificate, route permit, tax, thousands of three wheelers named as Tempo, Mishuk, Tomtom, Alfa-Mahendra, Easy Byke, Nasimon and trucks carrying passengers are illegally operating on roads and highways of internal and long routes. About ending public sufferings the transport leaders suggested to create separate routes and roads for three wheelers and four wheelers, arranging sufficient vehicles, using skilled man powers for all transports. Apurbo Apu Das, a passenger of Babuganj crossing Barisal-Dhaka highway, Abul Hosen, passenger of Dumki crossing Barisal-Patuakhali highway, are all stranded at Barisal Nathullabad and rupatoli bus terminal, as regular bus services are not available for the route thus they are riding on three wheelers to reach their destination.
