Plying of small vessels suspended

The movement of small type of vessels has been suspended from yesterday as rivers continued to swell in southern region during heavy rainfall triggered by tropical storm ‘Komen”. Abul Bashar Majumdar, deputy director (marine safety and traffic management) of BIWTA, said small water transport operations from Barisal and other river ports of the region suspended again from yesterday because of affect of cyclonic storm 'Komen'.  Operation of medium and multi-deck water vessels and ferry services will be continued until further notice. They were asked to operate vessels cautiously. The port authority restricted plying of ML (motor launches less than 65-feet in length) types of small water transport on all routes from Barisal river port until further notice from Sunday. The restriction was also imposed against plying since Sunday last and after a day break on Friday, the BIWTA official said. Abdur Rashid, deputy director of cyclone preparedness programme (CPP) of Red Crescent at Barisal said residents on different shoals of the region have been  suffering from downpour and swelling river, but no causality was yet to report. However, CPP volunteers remained alert to face any change of condition, Rashid said. Milon Hawladar, senior observer at Barisal office of meteorological department, said weather in the city and surrounding areas remained rainy, cloudy with gusty wind and 14.2 millimeter rainfall was recorded till 3pm in last 9-hour from 6am in the areas.  Zahiruddin Ahmed, executive engineer Water Development Board, Barisal office, claimed that rivers in Barisal district swelling, but still under danger level. WDB officials said after affect of cyclonic storm 'Komen', influence of monsoon downpour and upcoming new-moon, increasing pressure of tide at the downstream of the rivers.
