HC declares Niko’s deals with Bapex, Petrobangla illegal
The High Court (HC) yesterday declared that the two agreements which Canadian gas exploration company Niko Resources had signed with Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (Bapex) and Petrobangla, the state-owned national oil company, were illegal. Canada-based energy company Niko inked the two deals—a joint venture agreement (JVA) and a gas purchase and sales agreement (GPSA)—with Bapex and Petrobangla in 2003 and 2006 respectively in order to develop gas fields and extract gas from them. After the final hearing on a writ petition, the HC bench—comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman—also directed the government to confiscate all the assets of the abandoned gas fields…
