Nasim for preventive measures to check Chikungunya

BSS

Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim yesterday urged all to create mass awareness by taking different preventive measures to stop outbreak of chikungunya, reports BSS.
“Chikungunya can be prevented, if people keep their houses clean and destroy all potential mosquito breeding sources,” he said, inaugurating an awareness campaign at Dhanmondi in the capital.
The awareness campaign started at 9:00 am and ended at 2:00 pm in the city.
Nearly 10,000 students from both public and private medical colleges, dental colleges and nursing institutes participated in the awareness campaign. Director General of Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS) Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad and Director (disease control unit) of DGHS Prof Dr Sania Tahmina, among others, were present at the campaign.
Nasim said, “Chikungunya is a viral disease which is transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes. So, we have to take preventative measures to destroy larva or pupae of aedes mosquitoes.” Prof Tahmina said, “We have brought more than 92 spots under the chikungunya campaign. We have to focus on preventive measures, including destroying mosquito breeding sources to check outbreak of chikungunya disease.”
Health experts suggested destroying all potential mosquito breeding sources as the outbreak of chikungunya disease in the capital has increased sharply this year.
A massive awareness campaign is needed to destroy the breeding sources of mosquito for stopping outbreak of Chikungunya disease, Senior Scientific Officer of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) Dr SM Alamgir said.
At a press conference held recently, Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad said, “Chikungunya is not serious like other mosquito-borne diseases. After a particular time, patients get recovery without receiving any special medical treatment.” Health experts said symptoms of the disease appear between four and seven days after a person is bitten by any infected mosquito. Chikungunya is characterised by an abrupt onset of high fever frequently accompanied by joint pain.
Other common signs and symptoms of the disease include muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash, they said adding the joint pain is often very debilitating, but usually lasts for a few days or may be prolonged to weeks. Hence the virus can cause acute, sub-acute or chronic disease.
