Measures planned to prevent overloading vessels during Eid

Murad Ahmed, Barisal

The Barisal district administration held a meeting on Wednesday with officials of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority and representatives of the Launch Owners’ Association, law enforcement agencies and river police to discuss measures to ensure passenger and vessel safety during Eid.
It was decided to have a round-the-clock mobile court in river and port areas during Eid-ul-Fitr to ensure the maximum safety for passengers.
The river police representative said their manpower had been strengthened with 20 additional personnel being sent from the Dhaka headquarters. They were to man nine spots including the Barisal river port.
The meeting, presided over by DC Barisal DD Gazi Md Saifuzaman, agreed on 21 safety measures, including the suspension of the plying of goods-laden cargo and sand-laden vessels, for three days before and after Eid.
It was also decided that overloading of passengers would be strictly prevented in vessels during the Eid vacation from June 22 to July 1.
The River police, with the help of Rover Scout, BNCC and Girl Guides, will control the law and order situation in all the ghat areas during that time.
Vigilance teams of the administration will monitor the safety arrangements. A special medical team will be posted in the terminal area. Besides, fishermen have been told not to place nets in any river on the Eid night.
The meeting was addressed by BMP DC (south) Golam Abdur Rauf, Barisal port officer Mustafizur Rahman and BIWTC GM (Barisal) Syed Abul Kalam Azad, among others.
A similar meeting was held with road transport owners and workers with a view to making bus journeys safe during Eid.
Md Mustafizur Rahman, BIWTA deputy director and Barisal port officer, said the BIWTA would not allow overloading of passengers in vessels.
If any passenger was found travelling on the roof of a launch, the launch authorities would face the mobile court. The captain’s certificate would be cancelled and the vessel's route permit suspended, he warned.
Meanwhile, Barisal river port authorities issued an alert notice yesterday to all the 90 launch ghat lease holders for not to allow plying of any passenger and goods laden vessels to and from their ghats during minimum gusty weather during Eid journey.
At the same time the notice said that lease of the ghat will be canceled and the legal action will be taken against them if they run passenger trawlers and speed boats that have no route permits, time schedules and fitness certificates.
