Villagers foil bid to cut roadside trees

Villagers foiled an attempt by ruling partymen to cut down roadside trees on Dinajpur-Parbatipur road at Matherganj in Chirirbandar upazila on Saturday morning. They came in big numbers and overwhelmed the activists of Juba League, the youth wing of the ruling Awami League, before inflicting further damage after the goons felled a giant Randi tree.  Witnesses said the Juba League men, led by one Md  Amzad and his associates Md. Baizid, Razab Ali and Mozaffar Ali, arrived at Matherganj village with 6 to 7 hired labours at around 7.15am Saturday morning. The workers cut down the big tree within half an hour near the bailey bridge on Dinajpur-Parbatipur road and partially axed another before they were stopped by the villagers A few locals, who gathered there at the initial stage, tried to refrain  Amzad and his aides from cutting the trees. But Amzad was adamant saying he was awarded a tender to fell 160 trees. The villagers when asked them to show the tender papers, the Juba League men failed to produce any. As the number of people grew there, Amzad, his aides and the hired workers left the spot at around 10.30am. Hearing the incident local ruling party men also visited the spot. There are hundreds of valuable trees on the both sides of Dinajpur-Parbatipur road. “These trees are not safe here. We have to arrange round-the-clock vigilance to protect the trees”, said Ayub Ali, a resident of the area. Krishna Kanta Roy, a ward-level Juba League leader of Auliapukur union, said the road belongs to Dinajpur Zila Parishad. So far, there was no tender to axe these trees, he said.
