Dashiarchhara clash leaves 10 injured

Our Correspondent, Kurigram

Barely a day after Dashiarchhara enclave in Kurigram became Bangladesh territory, at least 10 people were injured in a clash over a piece of land near Kalirhat Bazaar yesterday. Police said two men, both claiming the land as theirs, first started exchanging heated words. Later, joined by their relatives, armed with machetes, they started a full-fledged fight. At least 10 people were injured in the clash.  The injured people have been admitted to Phulbari upazila health complex. Shiraj Mia, one of the claimants of the land, said, “I have been farming on 15 decimals of land near Kalirhat Bazar for the last 35 years after buying it from Obayedul Haque and Mokhsedul Haque of the enclave. The sale deed was done on a normal stamp paper as there is no land registration system here. Now, they are demanding the land back after Dashiarchhara was added to Bangladesh yesterday.” On the other hand, Obayedul Haque, who also claimed the land, said, “We had given the land on temporary lease to Shiraj Mia for some years, and later took it back  through a ‘shalish’ (arbitration). It is my father’s land. No question should now arise about us illegally taking the land.”  Phulbari upazila nirbahi officer Nasir Uddin Mahmud said: “I rushed to the spot after hearing about the fight, and requested both groups to maintain restraint.” Mohammad Badruddoza, officer-in-charge of Phulbari police station, said police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The contentious issue regarding land in adverse possessions along the Bangladesh-India border was also resolved from early Saturday alongside the exchange of 162 enclaves – 111 Indian enclaves in Bangladesh and 51 Bangladeshi enclaves in India. As agreed by the two countries, Bangladesh transferred 2777.038 acres of land to India while India transferred 2267.682 acres of land to Bangladesh, an Indian gain of little over 509 acres of land.
