Stress on optimum consumption of iodised salt

RAJSHAHI: Proper consumption of Vitamin A enriched edible food and iodised salt is very important to enhance disease resistance power in human body for keeping the public health from various diseases, reports BSS. Lack of Vitamin A and non-iodised salt in the human body causes many diseases including night blindness and increases the risk of death in infants and iodine deficiency results in a goiter and causes intellectual disability.
The observation came at a workshop titled “Universal Salt Iodisation and Fortification of Edible Oil with Vitamin” at Master Chef Restaurant in the city on Wednesday.
Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) organized the workshop in association with Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition. Officials and executives of different government departments including Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institute (BSTI), CAB, NGOs, business community leaders, civil society members and public representatives took part.
The meeting discussed ways and means on how to achieve universal access to quality iodised salt and edible oil fortification for the most marginalized people, with a special focus on children and women.
Deputy Commissioner Helal Muhmud Sharif and Deputy Director of Local Government Division Dr Dewan Shahriar Firoj addressed the meeting as chief and special guests respectively with CAB local unit president Dr Nasriin Lubna in the chair.
Director of Bangladesh standard and Testing Institution Altab Hossain, President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Md Muniruzzam and Medical Officer Dr Prodesh Kumar Biswash also spoke.
During his keynote presentation, Prof Shah Azam Shantunu from Department of Marketing of Rajshahi University, said deficiency of Vitamin A reduces disease resistant capacity and causes night blindness and other illnesses and increases risk of infant deaths while iodine deficiency causes goiter, physical and intellectual disabilities.
Narrating necessity of Vitamin A and iodine in human body he called upon everyone to be aware and come forward with positive attitude to inspire the common people for consumption of iodized salt and edible oil fortified with Vitamin A.
The chief guest put importance on launching comprehensive efforts of all stakeholders to create mass public awareness for ensuring intake of iodised salt and Vitamin A enriched edible oil by the common people to build a healthier nation.
