The Jail Inmate Database, introduced by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) one and a half years ago, is playing a significant role in reducing recurrence of crimes by the same criminals, reports BSS. “The database has been playing a vital role in controlling as well as preventing crimes, and most importantly decreasing the recurrence of crimes by the same criminals,” Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General Benazir Ahmed told the news agency.
“It is also playing a significant role in keeping an eye on the criminals who often commits crimes under different names,” he added.
The RAB chief said earlier it took a long time to know about the previous criminal record (PCR) of criminals as they usually give false information to hide themselves and the process was time consuming.
“Now, the database is helping in completing investigations into cases within the shortest possible time,” he added.
The database was inaugurated on February 7 in 2016, incorporating 200 types of data of the criminals, who stayed in jail even for a single day. It preserved biometrics finger prints of 10 fingers of both hands and iris scan of the criminals.
Previous crimes records, types of crimes, punishments, name of criminals, their addresses and professions have been mentioned in the database.
Communication and Management Information System (MIS) wing of the anti-crime elite force prepared the database with the help of the prison authority.
Database server and recovery server have been installed at the RAB headquarters and the data connectivity has been set up at 68 prisons across the country through optical fiber.
RAB has been giving training to prison officials to make them efficient to operate the system effectively.
The database had already obtained access to the National ID (NID) wing of the Election Commission and the process to collect information from the machine readable passport wing is also underway.
It has been built in such a way that the RAB director general and the inspector general of prisons will receive text messages once information of an inmate in any jail in the country is entered.
With introduction of the database, it will be possible to observer the criminal status and condition of the prison inmates in 68 jails across the country through a single click.
