Surma, Kushiyara in spate

Swelled by onrush of water upstream, the Surma and the Kushiyara, the twin flows of the Barak river in Manipur state of north-eastern India, are in spate. The Surma was flowing 20cm above the danger level (DL) at Sunamganj and the Kushiyara 25cm at the Sherpur-Sylhet point yesterday (Thursday). The rivers would continue to rise in the next 24 hours, sources at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board said. The Brahmaputra, which comes rolling down from the plains of Assam in north-eastern India and enters Bangladesh at the Noon Khawa point of Kurigram, was also rising. This would continue in the next 48 hours, along with the Jamuna, which name the river takes downstream in Bahadurabadghat. But the Ganges remained steady and its downstream, the Padma, would keep on falling, the FFWC sources added.
